RF Detection for Search Beyond the Line of Sight

Search teams working in mountainous terrain rarely face a clean grid. Slopes break line of sight, cliffs restrict access, vegetation obscures people, and narrow routes slow ground movement. A person can be close in straight-line distance yet remain separated from rescuers by hours of difficult travel.

A late-May search demonstrated the scale of that problem. Authorities used a drone to examine slopes, cliffs, and other locations that ground teams could not easily reach while separate personnel moved through narrow, winding approaches. The response combined aviation, ground searchers, mountain guides, and remote observation rather than relying on one sensor or team.

That layered model is the right way to think about BlueFly. Thermal and optical cameras remain essential, but neither is guaranteed to see through canopy, terrain masking, debris, or other obstructions. A second sensor that looks for radio-frequency evidence can create another path to a clue.

BlueFly is a drone-mounted Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy detection device designed to identify signals and localize detected devices using signal strength relative to the drone's position. Its data can be transmitted in real time to TAK-capable Android devices, allowing a ground team to view detections within its operational picture. Published specifications list a weight of 16 ounces, more than four hours of operation, and a detection range of up to 200 meters.

In a wilderness search, BlueFly could contribute by:

  • Scanning accessible airspace above trails, clearings, ridgelines, or drainages
  • Detecting supported phones, wearables, earbuds, trackers, or medical devices that are actively emitting
  • Recording signal strength and last-seen information across successive passes
  • Delivering candidate locations to a TAK-equipped search team
  • Helping commanders direct people, dogs, optical sensors, or thermal sensors toward a smaller area

A detection is a clue, not positive identification of a missing person.

The signal could belong to a responder, resident, recreationist, infrastructure device, or another aircraft. Conversely, a person may carry no supported device, the battery may be depleted, the radio may not be advertising, or terrain and body shielding may prevent detection. Search procedures must therefore establish exclusion lists, preserve context, and require independent confirmation.

BlueFly is most useful when integrated into a multi-sensor search plan. The objective is not to replace experienced rescuers; it is to give them one more observable when terrain has taken other options away.
